Vision

Sport that builds people, and a complex that builds a town.

A safe, accessible and enjoyable environment for people of all ages and skill levels, fostering community engagement and an active, healthy lifestyle.

The vision

Sport that builds people, and a complex that builds a town.

Every part of the complex serves two groups at once: the athletes and families who use it, and the community whose economy, health and pride it lifts.

Youth development

Coaching clinics, developmental leagues and mentorship that teach teamwork, discipline and leadership alongside the sport.

A safe place to play

Secure grounds, maintained equipment and a sick bay on site, so parents can say yes.

Community hub

Open courts, event tents and halls for concerts, weddings and public meetings. A place Igbeti gathers.

Local economy

Tournaments, training camps and tourism bring visitors who eat, sleep and shop in Igbeti.

Public health

Everyday access to fields, pools and gyms for all ages and skill levels.

Heritage and tourism

Monuments and gardens that celebrate Igbeti’s hills, marble and history, near Iya Mopo and Agbele Rock.

Objectives

Ten objectives: five for the players, five for the town.

Physical activity and health

Promote physical activity and health through organised sport, recreation and individual training.

Community engagement

Events, workshops and activities that build belonging.

A safe environment

Strict safety protocols, maintained equipment and regular inspections.

Economic impact

Tournaments, camps and visitors that stimulate local business and tourism in Olorunsogo LGA.

Sportsmanship and skill

Coaching clinics, training programmes and developmental leagues.

Public health

Reducing lifestyle-related illness and supporting mental health.

A sense of community

A hub where residents gather and build relationships through sport.

Quality of life

Access to first-class recreational facilities.

Recreation for families

Opportunities for families and friends beyond competition.

Youth development

Nurturing young athletes and instilling teamwork, resilience and leadership.

Five objectives for sport participants (left column) and five for the community (right column), from the general development plan.

Why Igbeti

A town already on the map for its hills and marble.

Igbeti sits in Olorunsogo Local Government Area between Ilorin, Igboho and Saki, with Old Oyo National Park to the north. Easter Monday hikes on Iya Mopo draw visitors every year and the state has named the hills a tourism priority. The complex gives those visitors a reason to stay the night.

Where
Olorunsogo Local Government Area, northern Oyo State. About four hours north of Ibadan and one hour west of Ilorin. Open in Google Maps →
Who
About 81,000 residents at the 2006 census, Yoruba-speaking, with a large diaspora in Lagos, the UK and the United States. Known as the Marble City.
The hills
Sixteen hills surround the town. Iya Mopo and Agbele Rock are the most visited; the town has hosted Oyo State’s World Tourism Day celebration.
The opening
In 2022 the state government named the Igbeti hills a tourism priority and promised road rehabilitation to Iya Mopo.
